Destiny's Sparrow Racing League is returning - and it could become a permanent fixture https://t.co/vk1xlpAVJy— Newsdesk Science (@NewsdeskSCIENCE) August 28, 2016
In a report by Wired, it’s been expressed by developer Bungie that we could see the SRL return as a permanent feature. Destiny’s head of events, Jerry Hook, spoke on the SRL, among other things, namely what players could expect in the future and whether or not we would see SRL return permanently.
“That’s a great question! We always struggle with how much to constantly keep in the game, and how our players will have to spread themselves out,” Hook began. “One of the things that the events allow us to do is create these giant moments. We listen to our players – most of what we’ve been trying to do is listen to feedback and the top ten lists Reddit brings to play, or what players bring into the forums. If there’s this huge outcry to make it permanent, we’ll definitely look at that. Right now, we just love how it feels — a key moment that is very exciting for players during our winter holidays.”
It’s hard to believe that anyone would dislike SRL. If a Destiny player’s Light Level, which determines the Guardian’s overall strength against adversaries, is low, the Racing League could provide pieces of gear that are higher in level than what is currently being worn. In that regard, players could infuse the gear and climb in power. Additionally, some shaders (which allow Guardians to change the color of their equipment) are only obtainable by participating in the SRL.

The main focus of Destiny is PvE (Player versus Enemy) and PvP (Player versus Player). The Sparrow Racing League provides a welcome distraction to this, and it appears that the reception to the SRL is a positive one. Hook touched on this, weighing in on what made the SRL so successful.
“I think first and foremost, it’s very unique to Destiny. We’re obviously a fantastic action game, and the racing created this very unique element for a lot of players. The big thing that we saw from the first event was, a whole bunch of players who’d never done general PvP activities came back into the game just to do Sparrow Racing.”
There’s also the matter of Destiny players being able to participate in various ways when it comes to SRL. There are some who dislike racing, and Hook wants to give them some inclusion. In a report by Gamespot, Bungie plans to bring the SRL back in a way that will be more unique than the last event. While we don’t know specifics, it’s clear that Guardians will be getting a more robust experience with the upcoming expansion Rise of Iron.
It looks like fans, new and old, will be the deciding factor on whether or not we’ll see the SRL return as a permanent event in Destiny.
